How to publish web files via FTP?

What is FTP?

FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol. As the name suggests, FTP is used to transfer files between computers on a network. FTP is probably the most convenient way to transfer large number of files or large size files. FTP transfers require the use of an FTP client (program). We recommend use FileZilla, the most convenient FTP client.

Once installed the FTP client in your PC or local network. you need to enter the following information:-

  • Domain/Hostname or Server IP address: This is usually one of your domains or subdomains but it could also be the shared IP address of the server or your dedicated IP.
  • FTP Username: This is the FTP login name used for authentication.
  • FTP Password
  • Port:  Usually it is set by default in your FTP client to 21. This is also the port we use for FTP transfers.

Uploading/downloading files

When you connect using your FTP program. on the left side of client, there are files which are saved on your personal computer. On the right side of client, there are files which are saved on the server.
  • Click the right mouse button on file(s) on the left side of client and select Upload. Your file(s) will be uploaded to the server.
  • Click the right mouse button on file(s) on the right side of client and select Download. Your file(s) will be downloaded to your computer.

All html, php, image and other files that you want to be avaliable to the public website should be uploaded into the web root directory in order to run the website.
